IN JUNE 1718, CHARLES XII has gathered his staff in Strömstad. While the troops prepare to cross the border into Norway, the King is planning his next move—to invade Scotland. However, such an operation requires more resources than he has at his disposal. The solution arrives with two captains who have traveled in the utmost secrecy from Madagascar to Bohuslän. He chooses to call them captains, or the gentlemen of the Madagascarian Society. No one wants to utter the real word: pirates.

MON TRÉSOR is the story of the young officer Peter Otterqvarn who, unaware of the expedition's true purpose, is ordered to join the voyage toward the future Swedish colony on Madagascar. A mission doomed to fail. Instead, he is forced into the crews of the pirates Taylor and La Buse, where he becomes a witness to the capture of the richly laden ship Nossa Senhora do Cabo.

Simultaneously, it is the story of Peter’s descendant nearly three hundred years later, who, in the void following a broken relationship, decides to uncover the meaning of the cryptic symbols under the lid of the box — the ones his grandfather called the pirates' secret code..

In the Press

"Thrilling Tales of Charles XII’s Pirate Captains What do Marstrand, the pirates of Madagascar, and King Charles XII have in common? Emil Karheiding provides a gripping explanation in his debut novel, Mon Trésor (published by BoD). The present-day narrator has inherited a small box with a secret compartment and a cipher on the inside. As we follow the work to decode the secret text, a parallel story unfolds in the 18th century—a world of Caroleans, colonialism, and pirates. A wonderful cast of characters brings the drama of the past to life, blending it with a modern-day reality that shares more with history than one might think."

"Emil Followed a Pirate Legend to Gothenburg The dream of a romantic honeymoon on a sailboat in the Seychelles instead became the starting point for what would become a nearly 500-page Gothenburg pirate adventure. In 2008, Emil and Cecilia Karheiding from Billdal got married. Their dream of a wedding trip to the Seychelles took an unexpected turn, becoming a journey back to the 1700s where a 300-year-old pirate legend first began."

About the Author

EMIL KARHEIDING was born in 1974 and grew up on the coast just south of Gothenburg. The sea and sailing have always played a major role in his life. When he came across a cryptic message—purportedly leading to an 18th-century treasure hidden in the Seychelles—his interest in pirates was ignited. For nearly a decade, he spent his spare time conducting research in historical archives and among ancient books. One day, a new lead surfaced: there was a connection between the pirates of Madagascar, King Charles XII, Sweden, and Marstrand.

MON TRÉSOR (2019) is Emil Karheiding’s debut novel. It is based on real events that took place at the beginning of the 18th century across Europe, Africa, and the Indian Ocean.
